Whittier Law School Says It Will Shut Down

Trustees of the Whittier Law School said on Wednesday that it would close down, making it the first fully accredited law school in the country to shut at a time when many law schools are struggling amid steep declines in enrollment and tuition income.The trustees of the school, in Costa Mesa, Calif., said in a statement that they had voted not to enroll new first-year students in the fall but were “committed to ensuring that students currently enrolled will have an opportunity to complete their degree in a timely fashion.” The trustees did not set a date for when the school would close.Marc Stevens, a spokesman for the school, which is affiliated with Whittier College, said that officials were exploring ways to allow nearly 400 current students to complete their education but had not yet arrived at a solution.Whittier is the first law school fully accredited by the American Bar Association to announce plans to close. Indiana Tech Law School, in Fort Wayne, which had only provisional accreditation from the bar association, has announced that it will close in June.Other law schools grappling with financial problems have chosen different ways to try to survive. Two law schools in St. Paul, Hamline and William Mitchell, merged in 2015. Charlotte Law School in North Carolina, which the A.B.A. placed on probation in November, has suspended the admission of new students. Thomas M. Cooley Law School, in Lansing, Mich., closed its Ann Arbor campus after enrollment dropped.At Whittier Law School, which opened in 1966 and was accredited in 1978, minority students, many of whom come from California, made up about two-thirds of the student body. Last July, only 22 percent of the school’s graduates passed the California bar exam, according to state data. The employment rate for long-term jobs requiring a legal degree was 29.7 percent among Whittier graduates, according to Law School Transparency, a nonprofit that compiles data on the 205 law schools in the United States.

Miami Beach moves to clean up Ocean Drive

After years of complaints about out-of-control noise, petty crime and sidewalks crowded with tables and oversized umbrellas, Miami Beach is taking steps to clean up Ocean Drive.

The city’s land use committee, made up of city commissioners, on Wednesday heard from members of the Ocean Drive Task Force, a group of business owners who approached the city about a year ago with complaints of deteriorating conditions on the iconic street.

The task force submitted about 30 recommendations, calling for upgrading lighting, increasing police presence, banning music from golf buggies and other vehicles and having restaurant and bar owners scale back the size of café umbrellas that many complain have created “a tunnel effect” along sidewalks in front of many businesses.

Commissioners approved sending the recommendations on to the full city commission but some expressed doubts about measures in the task force report to reduce vehicular noise, noting that police have had difficulty in the past enforcing noise control measures. While they said they supported efforts to reduce the “tunnel effect” created by large multi-colored umbrellas in front of restaurants and bars, commissioners said operators on the street should not be forced to use a uniform color for their umbrellas but have a selection of “pastel colors” from which to choose.

Commissioners also agreed to start a pilot program to move restaurant tables on sidewalks closer to businesses, even if that means some table space might be lost.

The steps follow a Miami Beach City Commission vote in May to ban alcohol sales on the street from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m.

Jonathan Plutzik, the owner of the hotel the Betsy South Beach on Ocean Drive and the chairman of the task force said he’s encouraged that commissioners seem ready to move quickly on the proposals. “Some items can be moved quickly and others will take some planning,” he said. “All of us agree that it’s tremendously important that we show progress this year on beginning to make Ocean Drive special again.”

How to Throw a House-Cooling Party Before You Move

Step 1: Spread the word!
Cast a wiiiiiiiide invitation net. This party is a case where the more truly is the merrier.

Step 2: Prepare.
Often, hosts will schedule this party for a couple days (if not the day before) the U-Haul shows up to pack up your stuff. Don’t be overly ambitious with how much packing you and your friends might get done at the party — leave some small, tedious items that can be easily packed over drinks and conversation.

Step 3: Stock your bar a little!
And ask that your guests bring their own mixer. You’ll want to make sure you have enough liquor to serve to your friends, but not too much that you can’t drain the bottles before your move. Not sure where to put all those bottles? Fill your bathtub with ice for an immediate and out-of-the-way cooler!

Step 4: Purchase some paper plates and cups.
This is not the time to whip out your fine china — it should all be packed away by now, anyway! Save yourself some dishwashing and buy some disposable party supplies.

Step 5: Get creative with your food.
Of course, delivery pizza or Thai food is always a safe bet, but you likely have some leftover produce or salad dressings or whatever in your fridge that shouldn’t be wasted. A big self-serve empty-the-fridge salad is a great way to utilize leftovers.
