Prince George’s County preps for a hotel boom

After years of being dominated by motels along U.S. Route 1, the Maryland county has seen a shift of late. The most obvious example is the MGM National Harbor, which opened late last year as the county's first new full-service hotel in a long time.

But the growth isn’t limited to buzzy National Harbor. All over the county — from Riverdale Park to Largo and Bowie to Hyattsville — new hotels are cropping up.

Six new or redeveloped hotels have opened in the past year, and six more are under construction, including the Hotel at the University of Maryland, which is adding another full-service hospitality option to the county.

Approximately 24 others are either proposed or approved and pending start of construction, according to a tally by the county’s conference and visitors bureau. In all, the county's tourism agency has tallied more than 4,200 new hotel rooms that are planned or proposed coming to Prince George's County in the next decade. That represents a near 40 percent increase from the area's existing hotel stock, which includes 78 properties and 10,854 rooms.

Some of those might be more in the "pipe dream” phase right now — hotels are included in plans for both the Konterra Business Park in Laurel and the theoretical FBI complex at Greenbelt Metro station, though both projects have been moving very slowly and no flags or estimated groundbreakings have been announced. But many of the hotel projects are expected to move forward.

The county itself encouraged some of this development, using its Economic Development Incentive Fund to help bolster a few projects. The fund gave a $1.4 million loan for a $27 million Courtyard by Marriott that’s now under construction in Melford, and $1.2 million loan and a $300,000 conditional grant to the developer of a Homewood Suites that’s about to break ground in Largo.

There’s also a new hotel going on a county-owned piece of property, a 2.6-acre parcel across from the College Park Metro station. Republic Properties recently won a bid to build a 125-room hotel that is slated to have a Marriott flag.

Google Doodle honors Fazlur Rahman Khan, architect of Chicago's skyline

Born in 1929, today would have been Khan's 88th birthday. He came to the United States in 1952 and studied at the University of Illinois, where he earned two master's degrees and a PhD in structural engineering. Khan was hired by Chicago architectural firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill in 1955, and went on to design the two iconic Chicago buildings.

He's considered the "father of tubular designs" for skyscrapers, which allowed towers to be constructed by the exterior frame of the building rather than the central supports of steel. This method, which proved to be far more efficient by using considerably less steel, has continued t0 be used in many high-rise buildings today. Khan's design innovation was used in buildings such as the World Trade Center, Bank of China Tower and in New York's Trump Tower.

At 100 stories high, the Hancock center was the second-tallest building in the world when it was completed in 1968. Built just a few years later in 1973, the Sears Tower is 108 stories high and is the second tallest building in the United States. It was renamed the Willis Tower in 2009.

Khan died of a heart attack in 1982 and was buried in Chicago. Khan is frequently remembered for his quote on always remembering the bigger picture in life.

"The technical man must not be lost in his own technology,” he said. "He must be able to appreciate life, and life is art, drama, music, and most importantly, people.”

Former Interns Tell How They Landed a First Job

In recent years, internships have gone from nice-to-have-on-a-résumé to absolutely critical. Employers today go on to hire about 50 percent of their interns as full-time workers, according to the Collegiate Employment Research Institute at Michigan State University. And the share is growing every year in industries like construction, consulting, accounting and scientific services. This new emphasis has upended the traditional recruiting calendar on campuses nationwide. With more companies drawing from their intern pools, recruiters have shifted their attention from hiring soon-to-graduate seniors to scoping out juniors, even as early as the fall term, for summer internships. Postings for internships now make up a significant proportion of the overall entry-level job openings in engineering, graphic design, communications, marketing and information technology, according to Burning Glass Technologies, a data analytics company that studies the job market.“There was a time when 50 employers came to recruit for interns,” said Patricia Rose, director of career services at the University of Pennsylvania. “Now we have 180. They want to wrap up talent before anyone else.”No one wants to be the first full-time employer of new college graduates anymore. Internships are “a really smart way to recruit,” said Adam Ward, head of recruiting at Pinterest, where about one-third of interns are hired in permanent jobs. “It’s all about trying before you buy.”With so many employers hiring their interns, the last internship before graduation is perhaps the most important one. “He who gets them last gets them for good,” Mr. Ward said.tory

Behind the Problem of Student Homelessness

College students live on ramen noodles. College students couch-surf. These popular images can obscure more ominous realities: hunger and the little acknowledged problem that some do not have a place to live at all.“‘Homeless college student’ seems like a contradiction in terms,” said Paul Toro, a psychology professor at Wayne State University who studies poverty and homelessness. “If you’re someone who has the wherewithal to get yourself into college, well, of course you should be immune to homelessness. But that just isn’t the case.”It’s difficult to know exactly how many students are homeless, or are dangling dangerously close to it, in part because of the enormous stigma surrounding the issue. But new research shows how pervasive a problem it is — and one that some educators believe is growing.Continue reading the main storyLast month, the Wisconsin HOPE Lab at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, released a study that surveyed students at 70 community colleges in 24 states. It found that 14 percent were homeless. Those findings build on a study released last year by California State University that estimated that 8 percent to 12 percent of its students were homeless. In 2015-16, 32,000 college applicants were identified as “unaccompanied homeless youth” on federal student aid forms, a number widely considered to be a low count. There are several possible reasons the problem appears to be so widespread, said Sara Goldrick-Rab, founder of the HOPE Lab and a professor of higher education policy at Temple University. One is that there are fewer well-paying jobs these days for those without a college degree. Only 11 percent of the homeless students she surveyed in the HOPE study reported making more than $15 an hour.

Ex-Professor Says Dismissed Racketeering Case Is Still ‘Devastating’

Next month will be the seventh anniversary of the darkest moment in Joy Laskar’s life.State agents for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation raided the Atlanta home and office of Dr. Laskar, then a celebrated professor of electrical engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He was eventually fired from his tenured job and indicted by a grand jury, accused of misusing university funds and other resources to benefit his private start-up. If convicted, he faced decades in prison and a hefty fine.It all came to nothing.Last October, a judge tossed out the state’s case before a trial, ruling that the five-year statute of limitations had expired on the misdeeds that it had accused Dr. Laskar of committing. It was an unceremonious end to an episode that highlighted how entrepreneurial initiatives in academia can go very wrong.Dr. Laskar, who was the subject of a New York Times article in 2013, decided to speak publicly about the dismissal last week. He had previously remained silent to avoid antagonizing prosecutors, who still hold family items with sentimental value, like a laptop with the only copies of childhood photographs of Dr. Laskar’s three daughters and an unfinished novel by his wife.“It has been devastating personally, professionally,” Dr. Laskar said by phone, referring to the case against him. “It’s had a huge imprint on us as a family to this day. It will never go away.”Nick Genesi, a spokesman for the attorney general of Georgia, did not respond to multiple requests for comment. Before he was ousted, Dr. Laskar had been a high-profile professor at Georgia Tech, where he brought in tens of millions of dollars in grants and research contracts from companies and government agencies. He started chip companies on the side, which Georgia Tech encouraged, eager to see successful university spinoffs that had showered riches and prestige on Stanford, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and other top computer engineering schools.

Berkeley Cancels Ann Coulter Speech Over Safety Fears

SAN FRANCISCO — The University of California, Berkeley, on Wednesday canceled a scheduled speech by the conservative author Ann Coulter, in the latest blow to the institution’s legacy and reputation as a promoter and bastion of free speech.University administrators said in a statement that they could not let Ms. Coulter speak because of active security threats. In a letter to the Berkeley College Republicans, which was sponsoring the speech, two vice chancellors said the university had been “unable to find a safe and suitable venue for your planned April 27 event featuring Ann Coulter.”The letter, written by Scott Biddy, the vice chancellor, and Stephen Sutton, the vice chancellor for student affairs, said it was “not possible to assure that the event could be held successfully — or that the safety of Ms. Coulter, the event sponsors, audience and bystanders could be adequately protected.”After the cancellation was announced on Wednesday, Ms. Coulter said in an email that she would “definitely” speak at Berkeley next week.“I was invited to speak by two groups on campus, so I intend to speak,” she said. With Berkeley’s reputation as one of the country’s most liberal universities, the campus and surrounding areas have become a target for small, militant and shadowy right-wing groups that have clashed in recent months with equally militant and shadowy anarchist groups based in the San Francisco Bay Area.On Saturday, at the latest of these violent encounters, the police arrested more than 20 people. One video that went viral on social media showed a man identified as a member of a white supremacist group sucker-punching a woman who identified herself as an anarchist. These fight-club-type episodes, both on campus and in the city of Berkeley, have escalated since President Trump’s election. In February, a speech by the incendiary right-wing writer Milo Yiannopoulos, also sponsored by the College Republicans, was canceled after masked protesters smashed windows, set fires and pelted the police with rocks.

Increase in teacher trainees is 'too little, too late', providers complain

University and school initial teacher training providers unimpressed by shock government move to allow 25 per cent more trainee teachers to be recruited for SeptemberUniversities and schools say plans to increase the number of trainee teachers they are able to recruit this summer may have come too late to tempt more quality newcomers into the profession. The National College for Teaching and Leadership has told certain teacher training providers that they may recruit up to 25 per cent more students to start courses in September 2017.But the reaction from teacher trainers to this week's surprise announcement has been mixed.'They might have spent their budget'“To give 25 per cent to everybody now is quite bizarre," Jo Palmer-Tweed, the executive director at Essex and Thames Primary Scitt, a school-centered initial teacher training organisation in Southend, said.“A lot of people have made plans on the numbers they had, they have done their staffing, timetabling and a lot of people I know have stopped recruiting because they are full. They might have spent their recruitment budget.“To be told, when you have got just ten weeks of recruiting left, that you can have another 25 per cent is really unhelpful.”And others agree that the move is too late.Rachel Lofthouse, who heads Newcastle University's teacher training courses, said the university's school of education had decided not to take up the offer and increase its teacher trainee numbers by 25 per cent.“With so much in flux over the last few years there are questions over staffing of programmes and the capacity for increasing the numbers of school placements in many regions," she said."Late changes to planning like this do not result in sustainable and stable provision. As such, this feels rather too little, too late to resolve the issues."
